2011 PROGRAMS
HILTON HEAD MOAA PROGRAMS FOR 2011
by Blaine Lotz, 1st vice-president
Your chapter program committee met recently to discuss possible programs for 2011. We believe you will be excited about the breadth and depth of this year's activities. From enlightening luncheon speakers to local educational field trips, our agendas will have something for everyone. Your board of directors has been pleased with the increasingly large turnouts for recent events. We want to continue that trend!
Bob McGarry is already planning this year's August picnic at the Spring Hill clubhouse on Hilton Head Plantation. Based on your feedback, we plan to hold our Holiday Luncheon in December again at the Harbour Town Yacht Club. When the weather improves, we hope to host either a dinner- or cocktail-cruise for your enjoyment.
We plan to invite both our new Hilton Head Island Mayor Drew Laughlin, as well as our new SC State Representative Andy Patrick, to speak on their plans at future luncheon meetings. We want both Mayor Laughlin and Representative Patrick to get to know MOAA and our local members. We also will be inviting a national MOAA officer to speak on likely changes to TRICARE and military/VA health programs. Space available travel, MWR (morale and welfare) opportunities for retirees, and MOAA travel excursions (from our own Public Affairs Director, John Cully) will all be on a future program to make sure our members are fully aware of what is available for their travel needs. Car-pooling trips to such places as Kings Bay (ballistic missile nuclear submarine base), Charleston AFB (C-17 base), Ft. Stewart (home of the 3rd Infantry Division), Parris Island (graduation ceremony), and Beaufort MCAS (Silent Drill Team and Blue Angels) are all under consideration.
Most importantly, as you all know, HH MOAA chapter has strongly supported Fisher House and local high school outstanding ROTC cadets with scholarships. We believe these type of outreach programs are consistent with our members' wishes and we urge you to strongly support them with your financial contributions, along with your 2011 dues contributions. This year we are also considering opportunities for our members to personally participate in a number of community military outreach efforts. These include honoring our ROTC scholarship recipients at a HH MOAA event, staffing the USO facility at Savannah/Hilton Head Airport, and participating in memorial services for deceased veterans at placePlaceNameBeaufort PlaceTypeNational PlaceTypeCemetery. We are examining these potential programs and will keep you posted as they become reality.
Keep watching your e-mail and snail mail for the latest exciting happening in your HH MOAA chapter.
